About

Hello! I’m Teri Shelton. Pleased to “meet” you.

Teamwork

I love to collaborate on projects with others. While I have a good eye for design and love collaborating on the design phase, I am not a graphic designer and do not want to be one. Just like I know I’m great at what I do, I like working with professionals that are the best at their job. I mean, you may like accounting but unless that’s what you do for a living, you probably still hire an accountant to do your taxes, right?

As a developer, I’ve learned that sometimes you need to be the project manager because you understand all of the pieces for the project: design elements, layout, content, SEO, automation, functionality, integration, and more. I know the right questions to ask and how to get everyone working on their part of the project so it all comes together.

Technical

As a web developer, I specialize in WordPress development, particularly custom themes and plugins. I use PHP, HTML, CSS (Sass), and JavaScript in my web projects. Though, probably my favorite thing to do is build APIs with Express and dev out the front-end in React.

I have a wide range of technical skills outside of web development. I am a go-to new application tester and help integrate new tools and functionality into existing workflows for people of all technical levels.

I love working with people. That’s weird, right? Geeks and people don’t usually mix. Well, I speak “Geek” and can translate highly technical details into plain English. I like to think this means I understand what I’m talking about and I have the patience to make things clear to someone that doesn’t.

Ethics

I believe in doing things right the first time, honesty, and fairness. I won’t pretend to know anything I don’t. There’s no shame in saying “I don’t know,” especially if it’s followed up with, “but I know how to find the answer.” The real key is asking the right questions and finding the best solution for each person, company, or project — and that’s one of my specialties.

My web dev history, in a nutshell

I made my first web page in 1995. But then I went on a different technical path professionally — although I still worked on the occasional website. I rediscovered my passion for web development in early 2007 and have been building websites professionally since 2008.

Hobbies & Stuff

I’m actively involved in the local WordPress community. I serve on the leadership team for the Seattle WordPress Community and I’m a co-host of the WordPress Developers Meetup as part of the Seattle WordPress Meetup.

I’m a big fan of hockey and football. My favorite teams are the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL and the San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals in the NHL. And, of course, I’m a big Seattle Seahawks fan!

I enjoy cooking and baking, reading, traveling with my husband, watching good TV (Ted Lasso is my current favorite), and researching my family’s genealogy (my mind is blown every generation I go back). I also really like crafting, even though I’m not very good at it. You can’t win ’em all!

About this site

This website uses a custom WordPress theme, based on the _s (underscores) starter theme. It makes heavy use of Flexbox and Sass. I’ve also used a custom post type and jQuery filter for the Portfolio.
